Texas experiences more tornadoes than any other US state. Survival requires a NOAA weather radio, a pre-designated interior safe space on the lowest floor, and immediate action when a Tornado Warning is issued.
While tornadoes can strike Texas in any month, the peak tornado season typically runs from April through June, with May historically seeing the highest activity. A secondary, smaller peak can also occur in the fall due to tropical systems.
Since many Texas homes lack basements, the safest place is an interior room—such as a bathroom, closet, or hallway—on the lowest floor. Stay as far away from windows and exterior walls as possible.
If you are driving when a tornado approaches, your absolute priority is to abandon the vehicle for a sturdy building. Driving away is highly situational and only appropriate if you clearly see the tornado moving away from you. If no building is available, the last resort is lying flat in a low-lying ditch or culvert, covering your head. Never seek shelter under a highway overpass—they act as wind tunnels, accelerate wind speeds, channel flying debris, and offer zero protection.
