Florida hurricane preparedness requires knowing your evacuation zone, having a 72-hour survival kit, installing hurricane shutters (not tape), and planning an evacuation route well before a storm forms.
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, with the peak occurring between mid-August and late October. However, you should prepare your hurricane kit long before June begins to avoid supply shortages.
The Saffir-Simpson scale categorizes hurricanes from 1 to 5 based on sustained wind speeds. A Category 3 hurricane or higher is considered a "major hurricane," characterized by sustained winds of 111 to 129 mph (178 to 208 km/h). These storms can cause devastating damage, snapping trees and causing long-term power outages.
Florida evacuation zones are typically lettered (Zone A, B, C, etc.) based on vulnerability to storm surge, which is the most deadly aspect of a hurricane. Zone A is the most vulnerable and is always evacuated first.
Taping windows does not prevent them from breaking during high winds. Instead, it only creates larger, more dangerous shards of glass when the pane eventually shatters. Use proper impact-resistant windows, shutters, or properly secured plywood.
